Oct
2011

As usual, by the VB conferences the main problem all attendees have is that they can’t clone themselves in order to be able to attend all the sessions.

The VB conference has two streams: corporate and technical. In the first one are presented topics of a larger interest such as statistical data, governmental actions, social media facts and others. In the technical stream we are more likely to see malware analysis and strategies to combat malware and botnets.

The first day of the conference was opened with a Keynote Address with the retrospective of a cooperation between anti-virus industry and law enforcement which brought down the so called “m00p” gang of Internet fraudsters. The operation was a large scale action between Finland and UK with help from AV industry gathered enough evidence to convict the head of the gang in a court of law. Even if this showed that it is possible, in the end, the entire effort was in vain: the head of the operation was only convicted to community work.

Other presentations have addressed botnets tracking, Facebook malicious activities, testing of AV software, in the cloud filtering of malicious files, strategies for monitoring Fake Antivirus solutions and how sensitive is one’s online personality.

The evening was closed with a drinks reception where all attendees have networked (no, this time not online but in person) and freely discussed about the topics presented during the day and ideas how to fight malware even better.
