Lady Gaga, the ever-offbeat music and fashion sensation, already had the most followers of any Twitter user, but with a new milestone she truly makes social media history. Gaga just crossed the 10 million mark – becoming the first to achieve such a feat of Twitter loyalty. At the time of writing, Gaga has accumulated an 10,056,132 followers, with Justin Bieber nipping at her heels with 9,662,147.

It’s no wonder – Lady Gaga fans are a famously loyal bunch, and they’re plentiful too. Gaga tends to engage with them directly through her Twitter account, addressing her doting admirers as “little monsters,” and cultivating an image as a kind of web 2.0 den mother. About the feat of social media fanaticism, she tweeted: “10MillionMonsters! I’m speechless, we did it! Its an illness how I love you.”

In November, Gaga quit Twitter to raise $1 million for World Aids Day – at the time she had 7 million followers, and she’s apparently collected another 3 million along the way. Gaga’s Facebook presence is nothing to sneeze at either. With 34 million Facebook fans and a FarmVille tie-in with her latest album, the so-called “Mother Monster” is truly a social media queen.
