“Steam Key Generator”. Enlarging the image and clicking through to the linked URL takes us to steamkeygenerator(dot)com where free games supposedly lie in wait for anyone downloading the app:

The executable itself is 157kb in size, and uses the image of a shield for the program’s icon – perhaps to conjure up reassuring notions of the Steam Shield feature to Steam users?

At any rate, firing the generator up results in the following “update check”:

Closing the pop-up and hitting the “Update” button takes the end-user to that old money-spinning favourite of ours, the survey website.

Tying surveys and offers in browser sessions to fake and / or dubious programs is a popular hobby – we also recently saw a “Minecraft Giftcode Generator” that performed much the same function when hitting the “Get Codes” button.

As always, don’t be fooled by such programs – sometimes they’ll give out surveys, sometimes they’ll generously donate some Malware to your PC. However, there’s a very good chance you won’t end up with the very thing that prompted you to download the file in the first place, so remember to bring a healthy dose of scepticism along for the ride…
