Vice President Joe Biden today publicly criticized the Chinese government for its restrictions on foreign journalists, saying that the US has profound disagreements on Beijings treatment of American media outlets. As the New York Times reports, Biden made the comments during a speech in Beijing, and privately discussed the matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Chinese government has cracked down on foreign media as of late, refusing to issue residence visas to some several correspondents from Bloomberg and the Times after each publication ran stories on the wealth of leading Chinese officials. Last month, employees at Bloomberg alleged that the news service decided to not publish a report on the political connections of Chinas wealthiest man, amid fears that the article would hinder future reporting in the country and hurt the companys sales of news terminals.
