The latest forecasts suggest that 2014 will be the year that wearable technology devices lose their early-adopter geek-chic label and start moving into the consumer mainstream. By the end of this year, research firm IDC expects shipments of devices to have exceeded 19 million and that by 2018, 111.9 million body-mounted tech devices will be shipping annually. But this doesnt mean that the average city is about to be overrun by Google Glass-wearing cyborgs, far from it. Because the devices that are leading the charge are those focused on health and fitness, a device category that IDC refers to as Complex Accessories because they only work partially without being connected to another device, such as a smartphone or PC.
