The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, is a militant group that was ostracized by the notorious Al Qaeda because of its readiness to indiscriminately murder anyone who stood in its way. It is also known for utilizing social media to great effect, and has deployed death threats and gruesome videos through the medium. The New York Times charts the bloody swathe that ISIS has cut through the Middle East, marking significant confrontations and events on a map.
