Even massively multiplayer role-playing games like World of Warcraft are not immune to urban decay. Over at The A.V. Club, Samantha Nelson draws parallels between real life cities and digital territories. Populations move to wherever the next city of opportunity happens to be, Nelson writes. She describes how the World of Warcraft expansion packs have affected some of the games fictional strongholds, turning bustling player hubs into ghost towns, and also the beauty found in their abandonment.
