Seven rounds into the 2013 Americas Cup, and the sailors, designers, and engineers of the defending champions, Oracle Team USA, had a problem. As The Wall Street Journal explains, the sailing club had lost six of seven boat races in the illustrious, 160-year-old competition to its opponent, Emirates Team New Zealand. Oracle Team USA — better funded, fielding a more advanced craft, but still losing — had to go back to the drawing board, going against sailing wisdom and overhauling advanced computer models in an attempt to claw back the advantage.
