Toshiba today (Jan. 7) announced the TCM9518MD, a camera module for use in cellphones that will record not only an image, but also data about the depth, or distance from the lens, of different objects in the image. Toshibas camera module has two lenses that each have two 5-megapixel sensors, essentially creating a three-dimensional photo that is analyzed by a depth chip. Toshiba says the two 5-megapixel sensors can also be used to create a single, 13-megapixel flat photo instead of a smaller photo that has deep focus.
