Cyberattacks pose a serious risk for nuclear facilities

According to a new Chatham House report: at Civil : Understanding the , the risk of serious cyber-attacks on civil nuclear facilities is growing. With increased reliance on , the use of commercial off-the-shelf software, and connecting to the Internet increases susceptibility for a cyberattack.

The myth: “We are safe from cyber-attacks because we are air gapped”.

The reality: “Protection by isolation” does not always apply. Removable media, such as a USB flash drive may contain , and can potentially spread malware throughout the entire facility. Consider the Stuxnet worm that infected two Iranian nuclear facilities (Natanz and Bushehr) — both air gapped.
