If you’re going to push through with a burglary, then you’d better make sure that there’s little that can connect you with the crime in question. Leaving your cell phone behind – yeah, that’s a huge no no; leaving your cell phone that’s connected to your Facebook page – even worse.
24 year old Oscar Martinez had to learn this lesson the hard way. He was in the middle of ‘Operation Bungled Burglary’ when the family came home and interrupted him. Startled, he fired at them with six shots from his BB gun and fled the scene. In haste, he left his mobile phone at the crime scene.
When police checked the phone and used the Facebook app, they came up with a pleasant surprise:
Lt. Sid Covington of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said, “It makes it easier on us, so you know, if they want to drop their cell phones at every crime scene, that will help us out a lot.”
Coming directly after the news about that thief who took his own picture and had it posted on his victim’s Facebook page, this incident really makes one wonder about the intelligence and antics of some of those who attempt such crimes. Hopefully the carelessness bug will spread among burglars and they’ll all be making hilarious mistakes like this.
