In the wake of tragedy, Uber today announced policy changes that will expand insurance coverage for its drivers in the event theyre involved in an accident. Uber will now cover drivers so long as theyre logged into the companys smartphone app and available to accept a ride — even if theres no passenger in the car when an accident occurs. This liability coverage kicks in only if a drivers personal insurance fails to cover an incident and provides up to $100,000 in bodily injury coverage and $25,000 in property damage. Uber is taking this step to eliminate any ambiguity while the insurance industry and state governments update policies and regulations for the new world of ridesharing transportation, the company wrote in a blog post.
