Despite having fewer members, use of the Instagram app has already overtaken Twitter in the US. The growing popularity of the photo-based social media network is the biggest surprise in Nielsens annual list of the most popular smartphone apps in the US. Over 2013, Instagram attracted 31,992,000 unique monthly users on iOS and Android devices, making it the seventh most popular mobile app in use in the US. It will have some way to go before it challenges for the number-six spot — Gmail averaged 64,408,000 unique monthly users this year — but its well over a million more users than Twitters app.
