Only a tiny 13% of respondents claim to have clear visibility into how AI engages with sensitive company data, while a mere 9% possess real-time monitoring tools to detect anomalies. Even more concerning, just 16% of these enterprises have established specific policies to govern AI usage, and a scant 7% have formed dedicated governance committees to oversee implementation. This profound lack of structure means that most organizations are navigating uncharted territory without a map, exposing themselves to significant risks. The survey paints a grim picture of an industry eager to harness AI’s potential but woefully unprepared to address the associated challenges. Without defined protocols, the likelihood of unauthorized access and misuse skyrockets, putting critical data at constant risk of exposure or exploitation.

The consequences of inadequate AI oversight became evident as 66% of survey participants reported instances where AI systems accessed data beyond their intended scope, often undetected by traditional security measures. One notable case involved an AI copilot retrieving sensitive pricing information due to default access settings lacking proper restrictions. Compounding this issue, 21% of respondents indicated that AI tools are granted broad data access by default, creating fertile ground for potential misuse. Despite 33% acknowledging these control deficiencies, proactive responses remain scarce—only 9% plan to introduce blocking mechanisms, and 15% admit to having no means to prevent inappropriate access. This inertia in addressing known vulnerabilities allowed risky AI behavior to persist unnoticed for extended periods in many cases.
