But AI introduces a probabilistic element; it learns, adapts, and often operates on opaque data sets. This means security leaders must now oversee not just technical defenses but also governance around AI models, data integrity, and ethical use. I’ve seen organizations start to create specialized roles or expand the CISO’s scope to include AI-specific expertise, ensuring that these technologies are both a tool and a protected asset. It’s about building a broader ecosystem of accountability.

What are some of the most pressing challenges that AI introduces to the cybersecurity landscape?

AI dramatically expands the attack surface in ways we’re just beginning to fully grasp. For starters, it enables attackers to automate and scale their efforts—think self-learning malware that refines its approach after each failed attempt. These “agentic AI attackers” can analyze defenses in real time and adapt faster than most human-led teams can respond. Beyond that, AI systems themselves are targets; their training data can be poisoned, or their outputs manipulated. For security teams, this creates a dual burden: protecting traditional infrastructure while also safeguarding AI assets. The pressure to keep up with the speed and sophistication of these threats is immense.

In your opinion, are current cybersecurity frameworks equipped to handle the unique threats posed by AI?

Honestly, most traditional frameworks fall short when it comes to AI-specific threats. Concepts like zero trust and defense in depth are still foundational—they enforce strict access and layered security—but they were designed for more predictable systems. AI’s unpredictability, like its ability to make decisions based on vast, sometimes unclear data, exposes gaps. For instance, how do you apply least privilege to an AI model that needs broad data access to function? I believe we need to adapt these frameworks by integrating continuous monitoring of AI behavior and building in transparency for how models operate. It’s not about scrapping what works; it’s about evolving it to match the new reality.

However, AI’s complexity often demands dedicated expertise—someone who understands model behavior, data science, and compliance in a way that a traditional CISO might not. I’ve seen value in emerging roles like AI security architects or even chief AI officers who can focus specifically on these challenges while collaborating with the CISO. The key is balance; no one should work in a silo, and accountability needs to be shared across teams to cover both technical and strategic angles.

What’s your take on the idea of creating entirely new roles to address AI security challenges?

I’m in favor of new roles when they address a clear need, but I caution against overcomplicating the org chart. Positions like model risk officers or governance engineers can be incredibly useful—they bring specialized skills to manage AI integrity and compliance, which are often outside a CISO’s day-to-day focus. However, simply adding headcount won’t solve the problem if there’s no integration with existing security functions. I’ve seen cases where new roles create more confusion than clarity. The better approach is to define responsibilities clearly and ensure these positions enhance, rather than fragment, the overall security strategy.

How can organizations leverage AI itself as a tool to combat AI-driven cyberthreats?

Fighting AI with AI is becoming a necessity, not just a catchy idea. In practice, this means using machine learning to detect patterns of malicious behavior that humans might miss—like identifying subtle anomalies in network traffic that signal an adaptive attack. AI can also automate threat response, shrinking the window between detection and mitigation.
